The Holy Transfiguration Monastery is a Russian Orthodox complex built over the years by the faith group called The Russian Orthodox Church in exile. The Orthodox have identified a rock atop of Mt Tabor as the place of the Transfiguration since the 4th Century AD, however most scholars will confirm that we only know the general vicinity and not the actual rock.Īfter six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. As the number of monks grew, however, it became necessary to look for new quarters, and in 1970 the community found and acquired our present house, a three-storey mansion built in 1881, after a plan inspired by a 17th Century Scottish manor. In 1961 the community acquired a modest three-storey house in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts that was then quite adequate for the few founding fathers. The Holy Transfiguration Monastery began in Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the winter of 1960.
